Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane are two of the most studied functional mushrooms on the market, yet they target distinct physiological pathways. Cordyceps is primarily associated with energy metabolism and physical endurance, while Lion’s Mane has been studied for its potential effects on the nervous system and cognitive function. Understanding the differences between them may help inform which one, or which combination, fits a particular wellness goal.
What Is Cordyceps?
The term “Cordyceps” covers a genus of parasitic fungi that includes both Ophiocordyceps sinensis (the wild Himalayan species, historically used in Traditional Chinese and Tibetan medicine) and Cordyceps militaris (the cultivated form more commonly used in modern supplements). Because wild O. sinensis is rare and expensive, most commercial products use cultured C. militaris or fermented mycelium preparations.
The primary bioactive compounds in Cordyceps include cordycepin (3′-deoxyadenosine), adenosine precursors, and polysaccharides. Research suggests these compounds may influence ATP synthesis, oxygen utilization, and mitochondrial function.
What Is Lion’s Mane?
Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a distinctive white, shaggy mushroom native to North America, Europe, and Asia. It has a long history of use in East Asian traditional medicine, particularly for supporting digestive and neurological health. Modern research has focused on two classes of bioactive compounds unique to this species: hericenones (found in the fruiting body) and erinacines (found in the mycelium). Both compound classes have been studied for their ability to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis.
Cordyceps and Physical Performance: What Research Shows
Several clinical studies have examined how Cordyceps supplementation affects exercise capacity. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine enrolled healthy older adults (ages 50 to 75) who received either Cs-4 (Cordyceps sinensis) or placebo for 12 weeks. The Cordyceps group showed a statistically significant increase in metabolic threshold by approximately 10.5% and ventilatory threshold by approximately 8.5%, compared to no significant change in the placebo group.[1] The authors concluded that supplementation may improve exercise performance and contribute to wellness, though they noted no change in VO2 max itself.
Earlier research using a commercial herbal formula containing Cordyceps in competitive cyclists also explored aerobic markers, though results were more mixed, partly due to the multi-ingredient formulation making it difficult to isolate Cordyceps-specific effects.[2] Taken together, the evidence suggests Cordyceps may support aerobic capacity and energy metabolism, particularly in older or moderately active individuals, though more large-scale trials are needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn.
Lion’s Mane and Cognitive Function: What Research Shows
The most frequently cited human trial on Lion’s Mane is a double-blind, placebo-controlled study by Mori and colleagues published in Phytotherapy Research. In this trial, 30 adults aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment were randomized to receive either Hericium erinaceus dry powder or placebo for 16 weeks. The Lion’s Mane group showed significantly higher scores on the Revised Hasegawa Dementia Scale at weeks 8, 12, and 16 compared to placebo, with scores increasing with longer duration of supplementation. Notably, cognitive scores declined after supplementation was discontinued, suggesting the effects may be dependent on continued use.[3]
More recent research has also examined the acute cognitive effects of Lion’s Mane extracts. A randomized, crossover study published in Nutrients (2023) examined participants who received a single dose of a Nordic Lion’s Mane extract. The Lion’s Mane group showed statistically significant improvements in working memory, complex attention, and reaction time compared to placebo at 2 hours post-ingestion, though effect sizes were modest.[4]

Cordyceps research has centered largely on physical performance, oxygen metabolism, and fatigue reduction. Lion’s Mane research has focused on neurological support, nerve growth factor stimulation, and cognitive function. Mechanism of Action
Cordyceps is thought to act primarily through adenosine-related pathways and mitochondrial energy production. Lion’s Mane, by contrast, appears to work through NGF-stimulating compounds (hericenones and erinacines) and, potentially, anti-inflammatory pathways in the central nervous system. These mechanisms are distinct enough that the two mushrooms are unlikely to be redundant when taken together.
Population Studied
Most Cordyceps trials have enrolled older adults or recreational athletes. Lion’s Mane trials have frequently enrolled individuals with mild cognitive impairment or older adults experiencing age-related cognitive changes. Research in younger, healthy populations remains limited for both species.
Can You Take Both Together?
There is no clinical evidence showing adverse interactions between Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane, and several supplement formulations combine both. The rationale for pairing them is logical given their complementary mechanisms: Cordyceps may support physical energy and aerobic capacity, while Lion’s Mane may support neurological resilience and cognitive function. What to Consider When Choosing
Both mushrooms are generally regarded as well-tolerated in the doses used in clinical research. Neither has shown significant adverse effects in the trials cited here. That said, individuals taking medications, including anticoagulants or immunosuppressants, should consult a healthcare provider before adding either supplement, as some theoretical interactions have been noted in the literature.
Product quality also matters significantly. The dose and form of extract, the ratio of fruiting body to mycelium, and the beta-glucan concentration can vary widely across products. When evaluating a supplement, looking for products that specify beta-glucan content and have third-party certificates of analysis may help identify higher-quality options.

Cordyceps and Lion’s Mane serve different functions, and the research supporting each targets distinct health outcomes.
